standing on the shoulders of giants

Do you remember a really powerful lesson that changed the way you thought about the world?

One such memory from me comes from years ago when my husband Mike and I were operating a business together.

One of our customers, Bud Jones, was the biggest in his industry – huge really. And you would have never guessed it from meeting him. I mean, the guy was a perfect gentleman. Older, smaller in stature and very soft-spoken.

So one day I asked him, “Bud, what is it that makes you so successful? What is your secret?”

And he looked me square in the eye and said, “Corinne, I am not the smartest man in the world. Not by a longshot. However, I was just smart enough to know that and I surrounded myself with some really smart folks. That’s the secret.”

From that moment on I began to look at the teams I surrounded myself with differently. I knew as a business owner that a great team was critical to our success – I had simply never understood the power of intentionally seeking out a team of people, each brilliant in their own area of expertise and each committed to the success of the business.

Wow.
